Jamaica, a vibrant Caribbean Island steeped in reggae, rhythm, and rich culture, offers a deeply immersive experience in the parish of Portland. Known for its serene landscapes and eco-tourism, Portland is a haven for nature lovers and cultural explorers alike. My journey here was an unforgettable blend of adventure and tranquility.
We began with a bamboo rafting trip on the Rio Grande, gliding through lush countryside guided by expert raft captains. Originally used to transport bananas, these bamboo rafts now offer peaceful, romantic rides through Jamaica’s heartland. Stops along the river, such as Lover’s Lane, provided ideal spots for swimming or picnicking, all set against the backdrop of the majestic Blue Mountains.
Our journey ended in Port Antonio, where the hills are dotted with colourful homes and the energy of reggae pulses through the air. Portland's natural beauty shone through destinations like Winnifred Beach, Frenchman’s Cove, Goblin Hill, and the Blue Lagoon. For thrill-seekers, Reach Falls and horseback riding adventures showcased the region's untamed spirit.
The culinary scene in Portland added to its charm. From the hidden gem Belinda’s Café accessible only by raft, to Cynthia’s Ackee and Salt Fish at Winnifred Beach, Woody’s plantain-paired burgers, and the spicy jerk chicken at Gurleys in Boston – each dish celebrated Jamaica’s rich gastronomic heritage.
Portland is more than a destination; it’s a soulful escape into nature, tradition, and community. With every raft ride, beach stroll, and reggae beat, Portland invites visitors to slow down, connect, and truly savour the essence of Jamaica.
